Best Ways Of Grouting And Re-Grouting Travertine Wall Tiles

Travertine wall tiles are mineral-rich natural stones with a surface full of holes and random craters. These holes form a part of the classic natural stone look. When you use them in the interiors of your home, you use the stones which are filled with grout. This process allows them to decrease their porosity and makes them immune to dirt and moisture. Grouting is a necessary step in the installation process. While grouting travertine, a different shade of grout is always preferred. This way, you can highlight the texture and natural colours of the stone. Before you start the grouting process, the tiles need a pre-sealant. This protects the tile and does not allow the grout to stick to the tile.

Follow the below given steps to grout travertine wall tiles.

After you paste the tiles on the walls, using a thin-set mortar, apply a coating of sealant over them. Apply this sealer from top to bottom of the wall and make sure that only the flat face of the tile is coated with the sealant. Do not let the sealant go in between the tiles and let it dry completely.

Prepare the grout by mixing unsanded grout and water in a bucket. Mix this thoroughly using a putty knife. To the unsanded grout, add water slowly and make the paste to resemble the consistency of thick mud. Leave it for 10 minutes and let the chemicals blend in together.

After ten minutes, stir the mixture again and by using a grout trowel, apply it to the wall. Start grouting the tiles on the top of the wall first. You need to scrape the trowel across at an angle, to squeeze the grout into the joints. Make sure you go over the lines thoroughly and check if all the joints and holes are completely filled.

Wipe the wall with a damp rag or sponge. Remove the excess grout and make sure that you do not remove the grout in the grout lines.

Cure the grout for a week and now you can re-apply the sealant. This time, you can coat the sealant over the grout and tiles.

Re-grouting travertine wall tiles:

Sometimes, grout gets damaged, and needs rework. If you notice crumbling, cracking or corroded grout, it is time to re-grout them. To do this you first need to remove the old gout. You can do this using a drill or grout extraction bit.

Once this process is complete, remove the crushed grout and sweep the entire wall to remove the dust or residue. Vacuum the area and move the dust particles.

Now, you can apply the new grout using a good unsanded grout. Follow the same process as above and clean the area thoroughly after your re-grouting process is over. Scrape the excesses with a damp sponge and let the wall dry completely.
